I have another movie to review. Today, I will be looking at another one of the best picture nominees for this years Academy Awards. This time, I will be reviewing "Selma" which is based on the true story of the 1965 marches from Selma to Montgomery in Alabama led by Martin Luther King Jr. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. For those of you unfamiliar with this one, here is the trailer:
- The acting in the movie is all around very strong. Every single cast member is clearly giving it his or her all. I'm actually shocked that this movie didn't get more acting nominations for the Oscars.
- The use of music is absolutely perfect.
- The writing is incredibly strong. I believed every word that every character said to each other.
- There are some really emotional moments that will resonate with you long after the movie ends.
- I also love that the movie portrayed Martin Luther King Jr. in a very multi-dimensional way. When movies based on true stories portray real people and those people are considered heroes, they often tend to portray them as one-dimensional. In this case the movie portrays both his heroic traits as well as his flaws which makes him easier to relate to.
- There is some excellent use of footage from the real events in the movie.
The Bad:
- I've got nothing.
The Verdict:
"Selma" is an astonishing movie that is incredibly written and executed very well. It manages to make the audience feel various emotions while making them think as well. It managed to beautifully portray such an important moment in history while remaining relevant to modern society. "Selma" is absolutely worth the price of a movie ticket.
