I have three very different movies to review! I will be reviewing a biographical drama about US Airways Flight 1549, a horror thriller, and a sci-fi thriller. I am of course referring to "Sully", "Don't Breathe" ,and "Morgan" respectively. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. Lets start this out with "Morgan." Here is the trailer:
- The first half of the movie is quite interesting. I think that largely has to do with the inherently fascinating premise of the movie.
- The action sequences are quite well coordinated.
- The pacing in this movie is not good. The movie feels way longer than it should.
- Some of the acting in this movie is pretty terrible. The only major exception is Paul Giamatti.
- The characters are written in such a way that nobody really has a personality. This makes it quite hard to become invested in anyone.
- The biggest problem is the last act of the movie. With such an interesting premise, the payoff needs to be really good. Unfortunately, the last act turned into a generic sci-fi action movie which all feels quite disappointing.
"Morgan" is a movie with a lot of potential due to a fantastic premise. Unfortunately, it is executed very poorly and ends up being a major disappointment. I would say it is best to skip this one.
Lets move on to "Don't Breathe." Here is the trailer:
- I really appreciate that a horror thriller could have a premise that feels fresh. This is something that doesn't happen nearly often enough with this genre.
- Overall, the cast is pretty good. Nobody's performance felt hammy or forced which tends to happen with films of this genre.
- This movie goes into some pretty unpredictable places which makes it all the more fun to watch.
- There is a lot of tension in this movie which will keep the audience on the edge of their seat. This movie also doesn't rely particularly heavily on jump scares which is nice.
- Finally, this movie is well paced. At no point does it feel like it is dragging on.
- The characters are written very thinly. With this genre I don't expect characters to have a whole lot of development but it would have been nice to see a bit more dimension.
- Also some people may find the plot twist to be way too ridiculous.
The Verdict:
"Don't Breathe" is not without it's flaws but it is a solid horror thriller that doesn't rely on cheap genre cliches. It will keep you on the edge of your seat and I absolutely recommend seeing it.
Finally, it is time to talk about "Sully." Here is the trailer:
- Tom Hanks is absolutely phenomenal in this movie. His performance feels so authentic and I wouldn't be shocked to see him get an Oscar nomination.
- The movie is shot so beautifully. Every scene is gorgeous to look at.
- The soundtrack to the movie is used wonderfully.
- There is a lot of tension in this movie. This is especially impressive considering that this movie is based on a true story and the people watching it will know how it ends.
- As with many of Clint Eastwood's other movies, there are certain things that are condescendingly heavy handed. In this case, it was the use of flashbacks. It feels like Eastwood is spoon-feeding the audience and it is kind of annoying.
- Also, there are definitely elements of this story that are exaggerated for maximum melodrama. This may bother some viewers.
"Sully" is a beautifully shot movie based on a riveting story. It is well acted and executed surprisingly well. While it may not be without it's flaws, I would say it is worth a watch.
