I have a couple movies to review today. I will be sharing my thoughts on "Crazy Rich Asians" and "The Meg." Both of these movies are based off of popular books. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. It is time to start with "The Meg." Here is the trailer
- The cast is clearly having a lot of fun and as a result they are a joy to watch. This is especially the case for Bingbing Li, Jason Statham, and Rainn Wilson.
- The shark looks really cool.
- There are some really thrilling action scenes.
- The entire last half of the movie becomes so ridiculous that it becomes very entertaining to watch.
- The first half of the movie takes itself way too seriously and as a result it ends up feeling rather slow.
- There are so many characters with a lot of potential that are given nothing to do and it feels like a wasted opportunity.
- Finally, there is a romantic subplot that feels really forced.
"The Meg" had all the potential to be a really fun movie and it fulfills that in the second act. If you are looking to enjoy a bad shark movie and can get through the first half, I would recommend this. Otherwise I would steer clear.
It is time to move on to "Crazy Rich Asians." Here is the trailer:
- The cast is absolutely stellar. Everyone fits their character so well. I especially have to give praise to Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Gemma Chan, and Awkwafina.
- The soundtrack is incredible. I definitely downloaded it the second I got home.
- Visually this movie is spectacular, it shows off the incredible setting but all of the costumes are vibrant and really are a treat for the eye.
- The characters are written with a lot of dimension. They are easy to root for as the audience gets to know them quite well. Even the antagonist of the movie is given a lot of depth and even though one may not be rooting for her, one can definitely understand her.
- This movie manages to take many cliches of this genre and subvert them in some subtle ways that really benefit the story and the characters.
- The ending of the movie feels a bit rushed and a little bit like it is resolved a little too conveniently.
"Crazy Rich Asians" is a fantastic movie that is well written, well acted, and a lot of fun. It both utilizes and subverts cliches of its genre in an incredibly effective way. I absolutely recommend seeing this movie!
