Today, I will be reviewing "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" which is the long awaited showdown between two iconic superheroes. I will also be reviewing "The Bronze" which is a comedy drama about former athelete/small town celebrity that becomes a coach. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. Lets kick this off with "The Bronze." Here is the trailer:
- The actors are really trying their best in this and they succeed to some degree if you take into consideration what they had to work with.
- There is a scene that is particularly funny and well coreographed.
- Most of the jokes simply do not land.
- There are some particularly bizarre soundtrack choices that just don't fit with the movie.
- Finally, most of the characters are written in a way that make them impossible to root for. There is next to no likeability in any of them and as a result I found it rather difficult to be invested in anything happening to these people.
"The Bronze" has a promising premise but is is squandered by unfortunate writing. I can't say that I recommend this one.
Finally, lets talk about "Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice." Here is the trailer:
- Ben Affleck made a fantastic Batman. He was easily the best part of this movie as were his action scenes. I have to also give credit to Gal Gadot. Even though her screen time was very limited, she made the most of it.
The Bad:
- The plot attempts to bite off way more than it can chew. It is convoluted and contains so many plot lines that all of them feel very undercooked. This left me feeling very unsatisfied. There is also a lot of things that go down that end up being completely pointless and don't advance the plot or character development in any way.
- Some of the dialogue is absolutely atrocious. There are certain lines meant to be dramatic that end up coming off as funny. On top of that, there are some lines that are very obviously trying to make the movie sound smarter than it is and it reeks of desperation.
- The soundtrack is far too heavy handed.
- Jesse Eisenberg gives an incredibly over the top and cartoonish performance. Every scene with him felt bizarre and it didn't fit with the rest of the movie. It doesn't help that his character is written with nonsensical motivations but there are some points where he kind of could have made it work if he had taken it down a notch.
- I wouldn't be surprised if the people editing this movie were drunk the entire time. There are some truly bizarre transition between scenes.
- For a movie called "Batman V Superman", the fight between these two characters feels very anti-climactic and limp. I was expecting something more epic.
- The pacing is very bad and a good portion of this movie is just straight up boring. It is overlong and as a result, I felt very lethargic leaving the theater. It is one thing to have a long runtime if there is enough meaningful content to fill the time but there is so much pointless stuff that could have been cut from this.
- Finally, the ending of this movie is incredibly dumb. Not only did this ending butcher this movie but it could present a very big problem for writers of future movies in this franchise.
The Verdict:
"Batman V Superman: Dawn of Justice" is the cinematic equivalent of a Bud Light Lime. Outwardly, it is quite flashy but it is actually very bland and just leads to a mess. This movie has a huge budget and has quite a bit of action but due to the incredibly poor writing it ends up being boring, sloppy, and nonsensical. I can't recommend this movie. Save yourself the money and the time.
