I have three different movies to review today. Today, I will review "Deadpool" which is the long awaited film adaptation of the Marvel antihero of the same name, "Hail Caesar" which is the latest movie by the Cohen brothers, and "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" which is an adaptation of the novel that adds zombies to "Pride and Prejudice." Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. Lets kick this off with "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies." Here is the trailer:
- There are some pretty funny moments in this movie.
- The action sequences are quite fantastic. It is thrilling and over the top.
- There are some clever takes on classic "Pride and Prejudice" moments that make them much more fun.
- The pacing in this movie is a bit off and as a result the movie feels longer than it should.
- This movie takes itself far more seriously than it should particularly in the 2nd act. The entire concept is ridiculous and I wish they embraced it more.
While "Pride and Prejudice and Zombies" does have some fun moments, it takes it self way too seriously to achieve the b-movie status that it had the potential to achieve. I would say it is worth a rent or a watch on TV if you are looking for a bit of a laugh but this isn't a necessity as far as theater viewing is concerned.
Lets move on to "Hail, Caesar." Here is the trailer:
- There are a number of genuinely funny moments. While not all of the humor hits, the stuff that works makes up for the stuff that doesn't.
- The cast is absolutely spectacular. Everyone brings their A-game and are all incredibly charming and likeable.
- There are some really cool choices in the editing department.
- There are some really well choreographed scenes.
- This movie is incredibly stylish and it really transports the audience back into the days of old Hollywood.
- There are some plotlines that seem to be created simply to have some big names in there. For example, I love Scarlett Johanson and Jonah Hill in this but their entire plotlines could have been removed and it wouldn't have had any impact on the movie whatsoever.
- Also, the plot isn't particularly cohesive which may bother some viewers.
- Finally, the pacing is a bit slow at times.
"Hail, Caesar" is a delightful tribute to old Hollywood, even if the writing is somewhat shoddy. I'd say this is worth seeing in theaters if you are looking for a light but good time at the movies but it would also make a good rental.
Finally, lets talk about "Deadpool." Here is the trailer:
- This movie is ridiculously funny. I laughed harder in this than in most actual comedies. The humor is fresh, edgy, and timed impeccably.
- Ryan Reynolds gives what might be my favorite performance of his entire career. He is likeable and charismatic which is really important when playing a protagonist that is a gigantic asshole.
- The music is fantastic. There are some great song choices as well as some clearly original tracks that mesh really well with the movie.
- The action sequences are coordinated very well. They are over the top but really fun.
- The way that the credits are done (both opening and closing) are so creative that they are actually enjoyable to watch.
- There is a really serious scene in the movie that goes on for way too long and the tone of that scene doesn't really work with the rest of the movie.
"Deadpool" is a refreshing change to the superhero genre that is so much fun to watch. If you love humor that is edgy and crude then you will love this movie. I think it goes without saying that any parents reading this should not take their children to this movie as it is not appropriate for children. I loved this movie and anyone looking for a fresh take on the superhero genre will love it too.
