Today I have three very different movies to review. I will be reviewing "Jason Bourne" which sees Matt Damon return to one of his most iconic roles, "Lights Out" which is a horror film with a classic but interesting premise, and "Star Trek: Beyond" which is the latest installment in the successful "Star Trek" sci-fi franchise. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. Lets get started with "Star Trek: Beyond." Here is the trailer:
- As is the case with the last two "Star Trek" movies, this one is visually fantastic. The special effects look great on the big screen.
- Also, the cast is fantastic as usual! Each of them own their roles and feel completely natural. Karl Urban in particular stands out here.
- The action scenes, while occasionally a bit too chaotic, are a blast to watch.
The Bad:
- There is one battle that is resolved in a way that is so stunningly dumb that it approaches "Batman V Superman" territory (those of you who have seen "Batman V Superman" know exactly which moment I am referring to).
- The plot is insanely convoluted.
- The biggest problem with this movie for me is that the whole thing feels rather bloated. There are so many parts of the movie that felt pointless while dragging on and on that I became bored through quite a bit of the movie.
"Star Trek Beyond" does show a lot of potential due to a fantastic cast, action, and visuals. That being said, it does fall flat as a result of a messy and bloated plot. I would say that this is only worth seeing in the theater if you only care about visuals and action. For everyone else, I would say this is one to rent or watch on Netflix.
Lets move on to "Lights Out." Here is the trailer:
- The cast in this movie is really good. This is something that I don't get to say often about horror movies but everyone feels natural and believable.
- The characters are written in a way that makes them easy to become invested in.
- There are some well timed jump scares.
- The premise is a classic one but it is extremely effective.
- There are some moments that come off as a bit too silly for a movie of this genre.
Despite some goofiness, "Lights Out" is a solid horror thriller that will keep you entertained and on the edge of your seat. I would say that this is absolutely worth seeing in theaters.
Finally, lets talk about "Jason Bourne." Here is the trailer:
- Matt Damon is back and he owns this roles as if he has never left. He still kicks a ton of ass and is incredibly believable as Jason Bourne.
- The action is absolutely insane. You will be on the edge of your seat through these many scenes. In particular, I have to give a shout out to a car chase scene that is one of the most over the top, yet enjoyable, car chase scenes I have ever seen.
- The movie is well paced and feels much shorter than it actually is.
- As usual, the soundtrack is excellent.
- The plot does feel somewhat underwhelming. The problem is that the stakes feel much lower than they have in previous "Bourne" movies. This may make fans of the original trilogy feel somewhat less excited.
Even if the plot does feel weaker than the other Matt Damon "Bourne" movies, "Jason Bourne" is still an exciting action movie that will keep you entertained. I'd say it is worth seeing in theaters.
Thanks for reading everyone!! As usual, please feel free to leave a comment but please be advised that if you are going to read potential comments that spoilers may be present.
