I have three very different movies to review. Today I will be reviewing "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" which is the sequel to "Sin City" which was a surprise hit in 2005. I will also be reviewing the indie romance movie "The F Word" or "What If" if you live in the United States. Finally, I will be reviewing the buddy cop comedy "Let's Be Cops." Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. It is time to start this thing off with "Let's Be Cops." Here is the trailer:
- There are some truly funny moments. Although, most of these are in the trailer or are an extension of scenes in the trailer.
The Bad:
- As I said earlier, the funny moments are all in the trailer. Other times that the movie tries to be funny tend to fall flat.
- I find it really hard to be invested in the characters or anything they do when they are all just so unlikeable. If they were written with just an ounce of likeability, it would have made all the difference in the world.
- Finally, the lack of humor leads to the movie feeling way longer than it is.
The Verdict:
"Let's Be Cops" had so much potential but is ultimately let down by lazy writing and a lack of humor. I would say skip this one.
It is now time to move on to "The F Word." Here is the trailer:
- The cast is incredible. For someone who played Harry Potter for so many years, Daniel Radcliffe is shockingly believable as an everyman. Also, the chemistry between him and Zoe Kazan is insane.
- The movie is surprisingly well paced. There are so many romantic comedies that tend to drag on but this one moved rather quickly.
- There are so many funny moments that will have you laughing out loud.
- The soundtrack is incredible and it complements the movie perfectly.
The Bad:
- There are some really odd scenes involving animation that really seem unnecessary and distracting.
- This movie doesn't exactly reinvent the wheel when it comes to this genre and some people may find that off-putting.
The Verdict:
"The F Word" does follow the formula of the romantic comedy genre but it does the formula very well. It is a delightful and funny movie. I would recommend it to anyone looking for an alternative to typical summer movies.
Finally, it is time to discuss "Sin City: A Dame To Kill For." Here is the trailer:
- This movie is about as stylish as it gets. The special effects are cool and the use of color in the largely black and white film is fantastic.
- The cast is fantastic. They are clearly having fun with their roles and that fun can really be felt by the audience. I have to say that Eva Green really steals the show here. Every time she is on screen it is impossible to not be hanging on her every word. This woman is the definition of a movie star.
The Bad:
- There is an entire storyline that takes about a third of the movie that could have been cut out and it wouldn't have made the slightest difference to the story. It really feels like it exists simply to fill time.
- There is some dialogue here that made me cringe really hard and it just becomes so distracting.
- There are some enormous plot holes that many will find extremely distracting.
The Verdict:
"Sin City: A Dame To Kill For" has it's moments but ultimately isn't anywhere close to being as good as it's predecessor thanks largely to lazy writing. I would say this is worth a watch as a rental or on Netflix but I wouldn't recommend paying the price of a movie ticket for this.
