Halloween is almost upon us. It is around this time that movie theatres are generally flooded with various horror movies so that people can get their scare on. This year, however, there is only one spooky movie hitting theatres in time for this spooktacular holiday. I am referring to "Carrie" which is a remake of the 1976 horror classic which was based off of the novel by Stephen King. This one has some large shoes to fill as the 1976 version of "Carrie" is executed very well and happens to be one of my all time favourite movies! Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. For those of you not familiar with this one, here is the trailer:
- This movie attempts to make this story that originally takes place in the 70s into one that feels real in the modern world and it does that very well by incorporating certain elements of our time into the story. If this was not executed properly, many things could have felt out of place but they all felt natural.
- Chloe Grace Moretz, Julianne Moore, and Judy Greer all shine in their roles. Moretz provides the right balance between vulnerability and strength, Moore is twisted and disturbed and it feels very authentic, and Greer fits right in as a caring and concerned teacher.
- The pacing in this movie is very good. The movie did not feel long or dragged out but it also didn't feel rushed.
- The story which was originally written by Stephen King is such a fantastic and compelling story and it really keeps the audience interested in what is going on.
The Bad:
- In order to make the movie more "modern", there are quite a few slow motion sequences that didn't really add anything to the movie. If they did anything it was make certain moments look sillier than they probably should have.
- Outside of Moretz, Moore, and Greer, the acting left something to be desired. Many of these characters turned into over the top caricatures that took away any authenticity from their characters.
- There were a few moments added in that were clearly meant to make this more disturbing than the original version. While this is not necessarily a bad thing, in this case, everything that was done in respect to toning up the violence was pointless for the story. In turn, this makes it look like the movie is trying to hard to stand out.
The Verdict:
Despite it's problems, "Carrie" makes very good effort to bring this classic story into modern times. If you have the choice between watching the 2013 version and the 1976 version, I would recommend watching the 1976 version as it is way better. Having said that, there is a good amount of enjoyment to be had with the 2013 version and you won't feel like you wasted your money if you go see it.
