I have two movies to review today. I will be reviewing "Dunkirk" which is based on the Dunkirk evacuations in World War II. I will also be reviewing "War for the Planet of the Apes" which is the latest of the "Planet of the Apes" prequels. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. Lets start with "War for the Planet of the Apes." Here is the trailer:
- The use of motion capture in this movie is incredible. The apes all feel really life-like which is a major compliment for Andy Serkis and all of the other humans playing apes via motion capture.
- This movie is intense. There is so much suspense and it really keeps the audience on the edge of their seats.
- The action scenes are very well done.
- The soundtrack to this movie really compliments every scene in the movie very well.
- There is a new ape introduced that has some really great moments of comic relief which is necessary as this movie does get rather dark throughout.
- There are a few points where it would have helped if the pacing picked up a little.
"War for the Planet of the Apes" is an excellent conclusion to the "Planet of the Apes" prequels. It provides a satisfying end to a lot of plot lines and is thrilling to watch. I definitely recommend seeing this in theaters.
It is time to move on to "Dunkirk." Here is the trailer:
- I really have to give a lot of props to Christopher Nolan for some excellent directing. He really proves in this time that he knows when to use restraint and when to let loose. This was exemplified brilliantly throughout the movie.
- The cast is excellent in this movie. Some of the big names like Tom Hardy and Cillian Murphy were great but a lot of the less known/newer actors really shine here. This applies largely to Aneurin Barnard, Harry Styles, and Tom Glynn-Carney.
- The score adds so much tension to the movie. A lot of the score makes use of the sound of a ticking clock and while it is kind of a cheap trick it is a really effective one.
- The movie uses largely practical effects and as a result everything looks much more realistic.
- The tension in this movie is relentless. It doesn't let up for a second which makes for a movie going experience that will fully immerse you in the movie.
- One of the strongest things about this movie is that it avoids so many pitfalls that a lot of war movies fall for. It manages to really let the reality and horror of war set in without becoming gratuitous or disrespectful.
- The dialogue is used a lot less than in other movies. I found this to be a really effective approach as the movie does a lot of "showing instead of telling" so to speak. The plot is able to move along without excessive or clunky exposition which allows the movie to avoid becoming condescending to the audience.
- I can't really think of anything for this section.
"Dunkirk" is a stunning telling of the true story of the evacuation of Dunkirk. It is beautifully directed and acted. This movie provided one of the most engaging and tension filled movie experiences I have had in a while and is one of Christopher Nolan's best movies. This is easily one of my favorite movies of the year so far. I absolutely recommend experiencing this movie in theaters.
