Today I will be reviewing two very different movies. I will be reviewing "Mission Impossible: Fallout" and "Unfriended: Dark Web." Both of these are sequels to financially successful predecessors although one franchise has a better reputation than the other. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. It is time to start with "Unfriended: Dark Web." Here is the trailer:
- The pacing in this movie is really good. It feels shorter than it actually is.
- This movie plays with some really interesting ideas and themes. Infact, I would say that the writing in general, while not stellar, is much stronger than the first "Unfriended" movie.
- The ending that I saw of this movie is fantastic. It is appropriately dark and little bit poetic. That being said, this movie has been released with 2 different endings and there is no way of knowing which ending you will get when you see it in theaters. I have read about the other ending and it sounds pretty stupid. So keep in mind if you go see this that you may not see the great ending that I saw.
- The characters in this movie are not developed enough to make the audience care about what happens to them. This type of movie doesn't need huge development but it should at least do enough to make one or two of them likeable.
- There are a lot of major jumps in logic that will make your eyes roll.
"Unfriended: Dark Web" is a flawed movie that still manages to do quite a few things right due to some creativity and a potentially great ending depending on which screening you go to. This movie is much better than it's objectively terrible predecessor. If you are looking for a decent horror flick, this is not a bad choice.
It is time to move on to "Mission Impossible: Fallout." Here is the trailer:
- The cast of this movie is as great as they always are. Everyone is clearly enjoying their role. This is especially the case for Tom Cruise, Rebecca Ferguson, Angela Bassett, and Henry Cavill.
- This movie manages to tie together a lot of things from past movies in a way that is incredibly satisfying.
- There is a moment near the end that I would describe as an "oh snap!" moment that is just fantastic.
- The cinematography is absolutely beautiful. It is rare for a movie of this nature to put so much effort into that and it pays off really well.
- The action scenes are absolutely incredible as always. A lot of that has to do with Tom Cruise doing his own stunts. A lot of the crazy stuff that he does looks real because it is.
- The pacing in this movie is rather uneven. There are points where it moves really quickly and there are a lot of other points where the movie drags on far longer than it should.
- The big twist in the movie is super predictable.
"Mission Impossible: Fallout" manages to be yet another exciting and thrilling entry in this long running series that still seems to have lots of fuel. I absolutely recommend seeing this in theaters.
