Today, I will be reviewing "Us" which is the second horror movie directed by Jordan Peele after his tremendously successful debut with "Get Out." Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. For anyone who hasn't heard of this movie, here is the trailer:
- There are many moments throughout the film that are genuinely very creepy. I love the fact that this movie relies more on making one's skin crawl as opposed to cheap jump scares.
- As is the case with "Get Out" there are also some genuinely funny moments which really are needed to break the tension.
- This movie builds suspense and tension masterfully. Many scenes are a bit slow in order to do this but it doesn't really feel drawn out at any point.
- There are a lot of really cool little details throughout the movie that will all come together at the end.
- There is a particularly well choreographed fight scene in the third act that is just beautiful to watch.
- There is some really writing throughout the movie. This is exemplified by both the dialogue and some really great plot twists.
- Finally, the thing that really elevates this movie is the cast. Everyone is really great but Lupita Nyongo's performance really steals the show. She really plays both of her characters with such authenticity and vulnerability and it is truly magnificent to watch. I would love to see her get an Oscar nomination for this.
- There is an opening credits sequence that is super pretentious and unnecessarily long.
"Us" is a fantastic second movie from Jordan Peele that does just about everything right. It manages to be super creepy while being both smart and funny. I absolutely recommend seeing this in theaters.
