I have a couple of movies to review today! I will be reviewing a romantic comedy revolving around a porn addict and a drama about two famous racers. I am referring to "Don Jon" and "Rush. These are two movies that are very similar, and by that I mean they have almost nothing in common. That being said, let's move this thing along. Before we get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. It's time to kick things off with "Don Jon." For those of you unfamiliar with this one, here is the trailer:
- The concept of this movie in itself is very interesting. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson play characters who are addicted to porn and romance movies respectively and they are trying to make a relationship work despite being held back by the unrealistic expectations given by their addictions.
- The actors in this movie did a pretty terrific job. Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Scarlett Johansson really bring their characters to life. I have to say that the person who steals the show is Julianne Moore who really becomes the heart and soul of this one.
- The humor really worked for the most part. When it hit, it really knocked it out of the part. My favorite being an ongoing joke involving church that got progressively funnier and funnier the more times that it happened.
- Everything in this movie that was said or done felt very authentic. This is absolutely a testament to a well written script and very good direction. This feat is particularly impressive considering that this is Joseph Gordon-Levitt's directorial debut.
- The last act of the story took an unexpected turn that I found particularly delightful and satisfying.
The Bad:
- There are a couple sequences, mainly with the opening and closing credits that are likely to give people seizures. I'd stay away from this one if one is sensitive to that.
- Also, the scenes involving Tony Danza felt awkward and out of place. He is a great actor but I felt like his stuff didn't really work.
The Verdict:
"Don Jon" is well written, heartwarming, genuine, funny, and an all around joy to watch. I would absolutely recommend this one!
It's time to move on to "Rush." Here is the trailer:
- The racing in this movie was incredible. There wasn't as much of it as you would think as the movie managed to focus more on the characters but when there was racing the tension was high.
- The movie is impeccably written. Every bit of dialogue felt very authentic.
- I have to give major props to Chris Hemsworth and Daniel Bruhl for some outstanding acting. These roles are easy to overact as people tend to try to exaggerate when playing real people to make them more exciting but these two played their roles very naturally and I wouldn't be shocked to see some Academy Award nominations in their future.
- The pacing rocked! The movie did not feel nearly as long as it was.
- I loved the fact that there is footage of the real James Hunt and Niki Lauda.
- I really wish that the relationship between James Hunt and his wife was explored more. I would love to go into more detail but that would take us into spoiler territory. Therefore, I will just leave it at that.
"Rush" is a movie that has been carefully crafted and the result is absolutely interesting and riveting. I would recommend checking it out!!
Thanks for reading everyone!! Feel free to leave a comment!
