Today I will be reviewing "Night School", "The Predator", and "Peppermint." Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. It is time to start with "Peppermint." Here is the trailer:
- Jennifer Garner is fantastic. She does a decent job of selling this character even though she is given very little to work with.
- There isn't as much fun action as one might expect in a movie of this nature.
- For something like this, I don't expect a whole lot of character development but there is pretty much zero here. It would be a lot more engaging if the characters were written in a way that gave the audience a reason to care about them.
- The villains are written in such a lazy and cartoonish way that it is really cringeworthy.
- The pacing is really bad.
"Peppermint" is a movie that squanders a lot of potential but cutting corners in the writing. Instead of getting a fun action movie, the audience gets a long winded and half-assed attempt at one. I would recommend not wasting your time or money on this.
It is time to move on to "The Predator." Here is the trailer:
- There are some really cool action scenes that are fun to watch on the big screen.
- There are some attempts at humor that work.
- With the exception of Olivia Munn and Keegan-Michael Key, the acting is pretty bad.
- While some of the attempts at humor work, a lot of them fall flat.
- The plot of the movie is very nonsensical and all over the place.
- Most of the visual effects look really cheap (as if they came straight out of a video game).
"The Predator" tries to be a fun action movie and it has moments of that but it ultimately fails due to lazy execution all around. I would say this is one to wait to rent or watch on Netflix.
Finally, it is time to talk about "Night School." Here is the trailer:
- There are some great comedic talents here that really shine. This is specifically the case for Tiffany Haddish who steals every scene she is in. Taran Killam is also good and Kevin Hart also has some great moments.
- This movie is paced well.
- While Haddish, Hart, and Killam are good, the rest of the cast is not very funny. They make a bunch of attempts at jokes but they all fall flat.
- The plot if very formulaic and predictable.
- There are quite a few moments where the movie attempts to get emotional and it doesn't quite succeed. These moments feel quite forced.
"Night School" is a movie with a ton of potential but even with it's charismatic leads it fails to really entertain thanks to some really uninspired writing. I would say this movie is worth watching on Netflix or as a rental.
