Today, I will be reviewing a movie that I have been getting more and more excited about in the past month or so. I am referring to "Frozen" which is the latest from Disney. Disney has been on a bit of a roll lately and it hopes to keep that going. Will "Frozen" keep the momentum going? It's time to find out! Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. For those of you that aren't familiar with this one, here is the trailer:
- Let's start with the obvious. The animation was absolutely stunning. I rarely recommend seeing movies in 3D and but this time I absolutely will. Nothing flies out at the audience, it just helps immerse the audience in this beautiful world. Anytime snow was falling, I could actually feel my eyes sighing. This is some of the best animation that I have seen in a long time.
- The voice acting was incredible. Everyone really brought their character to life. Kristen Bell plays the lead character Anna (who is essentially Jennifer Lawrence if she was a Disney princess) in such a likeable way, Jonathan Groff brings the right balance of coolness, awkwardness and heart, Idina Menzel plays her character with such sincerity, and Josh Gad turns his character into an absolute scene stealer.
- The songs in this movie are incredibly high quality. They move the story along nicely and are extremely fun to listen to. There is also an absolutely stunning song sung by Idina Menzel's character that absolutely brings down the house. If you don't feel something during that, you need to have your pulse checked.
- The writing in this movie is incredible. Every character is easy to relate to, the dialogue feels very genuine, the plot takes some turns that I did not expect, and it gets the right balance of heart and humor. humor is used very skillfully as it's only present when needed and when it is used it gets big laughs. The humor also resonates in a big way with adults as well as kids which is something that I think is very important when dealing with animated movies.
- If you have kids, many of these characters are fantastic role models and the movie has some great lessons for them.
- The pacing in the movie is incredible. The movie felt about half as long as it actually was.
- Finally, even though it technically isn't part of the movie, there is an animated short before the movie that is nothing short of incredible.
The Bad:
- There isn't anything that I can think of that didn't work for me.
The Verdict:
"Frozen" is proof that Disney has still got it. It is sincere, smart, heartwarming, funny, beautiful, and has incredible music. It is the kind of movie that can be enjoyed by anyone regardless of age or gender. "Frozen" is one of the strongest movies that Disney has put out in a very long time. It's great enough to stand with some of Disney's best. It goes without saying that "Frozen" is absolutely worth a trip to the theater!!
