I have three very different movies to review today. I will be reviewing "Despicable Me 3", "Baby Driver", and "The Mummy." Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. Lets kick this off with "The Mummy." Here is the trailer:
- The movie does eventually end....
- The pacing in this movie is very bad. It feels so much longer than it actually is.
- Russell Crowe gives what is easily one of his worst performances ever. It was so cartoonish and I couldn't help but roll my eyes through most of his scenes.
- Pretty much every character is written so thinly that it becomes impossible to become invested in anyone.
- There are some attempts at humor and they pretty much always fall flat.
- The action scenes aren't terrible but they aren't that fun which was always the selling point of "The Mummy."
- Finally, the way the movie ends really didn't work for me. I felt like there is a way cooler way that it could have gone.
"The Mummy" is supposed to kick of Universal's "Dark Universe." Unfortunately it kicks it off with an absolute flop. The movie is largely a dull mess that isn't really worth the time. I'd say skip this one.
It is time to discuss "Baby Driver." Here is the trailer:
- The cast is all bringing their best. Jamie Foxx is about the best he has ever been, Kevin Spacey is a delight, Eiza Gonzalez feels really natural, and Ansel Elgort and Lily James are both really likeable and have fantastic chemistry.
- The dialogue is razor sharp throughout.
- The action sequences are absolutely stunning. They bring so much entertainment and are choreographed beautifully.
- This movie is paced very well. It feels way shorter than it is.
- This movie is about as stylish as it gets.
- Finally this movie has such a great soundtrack and it is used in a phenomenal way that doesn't just compliment the scene but it really adds to the story.
- The ending is a bit predictable. It would have been nice to not see it coming.
"Baby Driver" is stylish, thrilling, and one of the most entertaining movies that I have seen in a while. There is so much to enjoy that I can't really do it justice with words. I would absolutely recommend seeing this in theaters.
Finally, it is time to break down "Despicable Me 3." Here is the trailer:
- The animation is fantastic as usual. Everything is a treat for the eye.
- While not all of the jokes landed, the ones that do land hard.
- This movie isn't as minion heavy as the last ones but when the minions do appear they are used very well. There are 2 particular sequences with them that had me laughing hard.
- There are some great moments with a lot of heart.
- Finally, there are some really great music choices.
- There are some aspects of the main villain's shtick that get old pretty fast.
- The plot bit off way more than it could chew. There are a lot of side stories and jumping around. This means that certain plot elements are rushed which results in resolutions that aren't earned.
"Despicable Me 3" is not the strongest entry into the "Despicable Me" franchise but it still brings a decent amount of laughs, heart, and fun. If you liked the previous installments or want something to entertain your kids for a little bit I would recommend this one.
