Today I will be reviewing "Trainwreck" which is a comedy written by Amy Schumer who is a rising star in the world of comedy. Before I do this review I would like to address something. A few days ago, there was a shooting at a screening of this movie in Lafayette, Louisiana. Two people were killed and nine others were injured. I am deeply saddened by this news and my heart goes out to the victims and their families. It is absolutely disgusting that incidents like these are happening as often as they are. Recently there have been so many shootings taking place in places where people should be safe such as schools, churches, movie theaters, etc. I hope that those who have the power to do something to prevent these issues will step up and make things happen. Now that I have that off my chest, I will review the movie. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. For those of you unfamiliar with this movie, here is the trailer:
- This movie is surprisingly funny. The trailer does not do the humor justice. I'm guessing that the reason for this is that the trailer had to be before some PG rated movies and most of the funny jokes are way beyond PG. While the humor may be crude, it is really quite clever. The jokes are well timed and delivered perfectly.
- The cast is delightful. LeBron James and Jon Cena prove to be way funnier than I would have thought, Bill Hader makes for a surprisingly good lead and Tilda Swinton is such a delight. But the real star of this is Amy Schumer who is so funny and so likeable that she is just such a joy to watch. (As a side note for those of you who enjoy sketch comedy, check out Amy Schumer's show on Comedy Central. Its called "Inside Amy Schumer" and it is delightful).
- As funny as this movie is, there are many touching moments in this movie.
- There are some pretty awesome cameos in this movie.
- The biggest strength of this movie is the writing. The characters often find themselves in situations that are easy to relate to, the dialogue is very strong, it cleverly subverts stereotypical romantic comedy gender roles, and keeps the audience invested in these characters. The writing really shows how talented Amy Schumer is and I hope she keeps writing movies.
The Bad:
- The pacing in this movie is mostly good but it does become somewhat uneven in the final act.
The Verdict:
"Trainwreck" is a refreshing romantic comedy with something for everyone. It has consistently crude but hilarious comedy, sweet moments, and clever writing. "Trainwreck" is a real winner and is perfect for a date night or for anyone looking for a good time at the movies.
