I have three very different movies to review today. I will be reviewing "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" and "The Incredibles 2" which are both sequels to very successful movies. I will also be reviewing "Hereditary" which is a small horror movie with lots of buzz. Before I get started, I'd like to give a shoutout to the Free Gamer's Alliance YouTube channel. Their videos cover everything from walkthroughs, glitches, easter eggs, and various amusing video game related content, all of which is delivered with some colorful commentary while they have buckets of fun doing it. Lets start with "Hereditary." Here is the trailer:
- The acting in this movie is incredible. Every cast member is both believable and unsettling in their role.
- There are some scenes that are truly unnerving which is a positive thing for a movie like this.
- The cinematography is absolutely beautiful. Everything was shot in such an artful and effective manner.
- The pacing in this movie is absolutely brutal. The movie feels so much longer than it actually is.
- There is a lot of buildup in this movie and that should mean really good payoff. Unfortunately, the last act falls right off a cliff. Instead of giving the audience an epic and satisfying conclusion, the movie concludes in such a ridiculous manner that the majority of the people in the screening I was in (myself included) were laughing through it.
"Hereditary" does a lot of things right but unfortunately it seems to be all in vain as the payoff is not worth it in the end. As it is a decent yet unsatisfying movie, I wouldn't recommend seeing it in theaters but it may be worth a watch on Netflix or something like that.
It is time to talk about "The Incredibles 2." Here is the trailer:
- The animation in this movie is some of the best Pixar has done. This movie is a treat for the eyes.
- All of the voice actors, both returning and new, are spectacular.
- There are some really thrilling action scenes that will have audiences on the edge of their seats.
- The soundtrack is absolutely fantastic. Every bit of the score fits in well with every scene.
- There are some great comedic moments that will have you laughing out loud. On top of that, there is one joke in particular that will go over kids heads but it will make all of the adults laugh really hard.
- The pacing in this movie is a bit uneven. There are some scenes that are definitely dragged out longer than they need to be and at other times the pacing is really good.
- There is a short film before this movie called "Bao" that is truly breathtaking. I seriously recommend making sure you are in your seats in time for this to start as it is easily one of the best Pixar shorts to date.
- Finally, there is one scene where there are really intense flashing lights for a little bit so if you have any sensitivities to that or are prone to seizures, I would advise proceeding with caution. At this point, most movie theaters do have warning signs about this but I figured I should bring it up anyways.
"The Incredibles 2" is a fun sequel filled with lots of heart, humor, and great action. This sequel was absolutely worth the wait and is worth seeing in theaters.
Finally, it is time to discuss "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom." Here is the trailer:
- The dinosaurs look so much better than they did in the last "Jurassic World" movie.
- This movie plays with some really interesting ideas that could have made for a really great movie if they were executed well.
- Finally, the ending of this movie is fantastic and it sets up something really interesting for the franchise going forward.
- The pacing in this movie is pretty bad. The movie feels so much longer than it actually does due to a lot of scenes being dragged out longer than they should have.
- In a "Jurassic" movie I expect the decisions made by the characters to be dumb but this took that to a whole new level and I found myself rolling my eyes a lot.
- One of the main villains is way too cartoonish to be taken even slightly seriously.
- With the exception of the beginning and the end, the writing is pretty poor. This is displayed through some rather awkward dialogue as well as the insanely nonsensical plot.
- Finally, I found myself bored through a lot of this movie which really shouldn't have happened with dinosaurs being involved. With the exception of the beginning and the end and the odd scene in-between nothing really interesting happens and a lot of it feels like filler.
"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" has a lot of potential. I felt like a lot of the pieces of a great movie were there but the pieces aren't put together in a way that made for an exciting and interesting movie. I think this movie would make for a better rental or Netflix option than a theatrical viewing experience.
